golf hua hin For many visitors to Thailand and to Hua Hin in particular, the expectation is of lazy days spent around a pool or on the beach, maybe a bit of swimming with the evenings spent dining out on good food with a few drinks. Overall, the emphasis is on relaxation and "sanuk" - fun.

If this is what you're looking for, then you won't be disappointed, but there is more to do during the day and the opportunities for keeping fit and playing sport are plentiful. Below are listed the main sporting acivities, where you can participate and the costs involved.

Golf
Hua Hin and its surrounds are a golfer's paradise with 7 quality courses within a 30 minute drive. An eigth has recently opened and a ninth is still under construction and should be ready to play at some point during 2008. We have a preview of the latest images from the fairways.

Fishing and eco-cruises
As Hua Hin is right on the Gulf of Thailand, you would not be mistaken in thinking there's some good fishing to be had - both at sea and inland for freshwater species.

Kiteboarding
Over the past few of years kitesurfing or kiteboarding has become an extremely popular sport in Hua Hin. There are now at least two kitesurfing schools in Hua Hin offering lessons, tuition and equipment for hire.

Fitness and Martial Arts
For those who want to stay fit during their visit, there are a number of gyms around town. Most of the top-end hotels have good facilities and some will allow guests the use of them for a weekly or monthly fee.

Elephant camps and trekking
There is an elephant camp situated some 3 km west of the town centre on the road leading to Pala U. Upon arrival, you will be introduced to and familiarised with the animals and given the chance to feed them some bananas.

Thai Massage
There are a multitude of massage establishments in Hua Hin now. It will be impossible to list them all. Some are significantly better than others. One that stands out for special mention is on Petchkasem Road, just before The Royal Palace and next to Golden Place.

Cooking courses
Catching on to the western popularity of the cuisine, a number of good Thai cooking schools have sprung up in Hua Hin. These will give you an introduction to all the ingredients and even take you to a local market where you'll be shown how to choose the best and for you to experience the enormous variety of goods for sale - some of which may be quite difficult to find back home.

Whilst there are no formally set out trails for either of the above activities, both are easy to enjoy as long as you follow some "rules of the road", particularly when setting out on any type of bicycle.

Go Karting
Situated opposite Hua Hin Airport is Kart Hua Hin that has one of only twelve go karting tracks in Thailand. The curcuit is 700m long and features a banked curve for speed and the full facilities of pits, floodlighting, beer garden and catering. There is a range of karts available for hire, from the Lightening - a real mean machine that cannot be driven by everyone - to two seaters without so much power that are ideal for children accompanied by adults. Prices are dependent on the type of kart hired and for how long. Currently, a 12 minute session in a 6.5hp Junior kart costs 400 baht. Opening times are daily from 10.30am-7.00pm, with later times available by appointment. Transfers to and from your accommodation can be arranged as well.
